Mosby's Raiders Return is the sequel to that author's award winning book, Legacy of the Gray Ghost, which was named the Best Historical Fiction book of 2011 and also the Gold Medalist as the Best southern Fiction Novel of the year. This book picks up where Legacy left off as it details the events in the next season at Mosby University, located in the beautiful northern Virginia horse country. The school was named after the legendary John Mosby, who led a band of Confederate raiders deep behind Union lines and his uncanny ability to escape and disappear led him to acquire the nickname of the Gray Ghost. There are many challenges facing the school's football coach due to graduation losses and injuries as he tries to duplicate the success the team enjoyed during the schools, 50th anniversary year in 1958. Although school integration had been mandated by the US Supreme Court in 1954, many politicians and influential people in Virginia were resisting and preferred to keep things the way they always were. When the president of Mosby University decides to offer young men of color the opportunity to attend this formerly all-white prestigious school, he faces a lot of criticism from some of the alumni. Many of these same critics had already disagreed with the previous year's decision to employ a black coaching staff, but when a few black players join the team in 1959, the critics were outraged. While the story is fiction, many of the feelings and attitudes described were reflective of that era. Readers who like football and like to cheer for the underdog should enjoy MOSBY'S RAIDERS RETURN. Also, the antics of the various groups of students at the university should guarantee the reader plenty of laughs to go along with the cheers and the football action. It's also a picture of college life in the South in the late 50's that will bring back memories to anyone who lived in that era.

"Mosby's Raiders Return" is a sequel to "Legacy of the Gray Ghost" and takes off right where the first book ends. 1958 was a great year for Willie Hairston. One accomplishment was becoming Mosby University's first colored graduate. The other major success was coaching the Raiders football team to an unbelievable season. And, things are looking better for 1959 when Willie's son is born; he's given a five year contract to coach the Raiders, and he and Sally are able to buy their first home. But, things are not all great. Since Mosby doesn't offer athletic scholarships, their players are students first and players second. Graduation has taken a toll on his team and he is not sure how he is going to fill some awfully big shoes. With Willie's graduation, school president Bob Howard is even more convinced that it is time for desegregation if they can find some quality colored students to offer academic scholarships. One of Willie's assistant coaches remembers a player who once played for Oakmont but lost his scholarship. Willie decides to give him a chance and the first of the school's colored players arrives at Mosby. The young man meets other colored students who have had previous football experience and they all decide to join the team. Suddenly things are a lot better for the Raiders. The season progresses and the annual showdown between Mosby and Oakmont is fast approaching. To the dismay of the players, fans, and coaches, Mosby's top player is injured. Is Mosby doomed to go down to the high scoring Oakmont team? It looks that way until one of the coaches remembers a new radical offense he once saw. But, do the Raiders have the time and talent to learn a new offense with only a few days before the big game. Willie is willing to bet everything that they do.

Another winner for Gerry Zimmerman. What a great story! Old familiar characters and new exciting ones keep the reader waiting to see what happens next. This is not your typical football story, but a story of life, the beginning of a new age in sports and education. The writer has captured life on an all-male university as it should have been, funny and entertaining. Very nicely done.

Mosby Raiders Return edition by Gerry A Zimmerman Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Mosby's Raiders Return brings even more depth of imagination and fun reading than its original story! Not just for male football buffs! A great read for anyone during the football season or for someone as a Christmas gift! Very entertaining and caused me to re-read the original. Well done, Gerry. Will there be a third?
This sequel surpasses the original in both depth of characters and suspense. It gives an amusing but accurate glimpse of college student life in the late 50s and early 60s it is a delightful read for anyone who remembers those years. It is easy to put yourself in many of the situations developed. Read it before school and the football season start.
Great story about how things were in the South when I was coming up. Great details about a Southern School and its changing football program and a very well written book. Much more detailed and suspenseful than the first book. Gave it to my wife and she even enjoyed it! Would recommend this book to anyone interested in football or wanting a good read.
Gerry Zimmerman has etched wonderfully once again the riveting portrait of a southern college football team filled with devilry, joy, team mate closeness and humor with rich and interesting characters. His tale is sentimental inspiring and catches the reader wanting to return to the good old days of college football victories before it became big time entertainment! Its a brilliant yarn and a page turning treat! Zimmerman's Raiders Return is a flame of joy!!
As a former football player, I enjoyed reading about the struggles and camaraderie of the team...which includes many more dynamics then what a typical team may have to go through (racism, no money, small coaching staff, limited resources, unique/criticized coaching style, etc.). Made me wish I'd had a coach like Willie Hairston! I also enjoyed learning about the history of the school, team, and people. Zimmerman's style of writing keeps the reader interested - I appreciated the development of the characters and all the dialogue!
Gerry Zimmerman did another nice job of writing an enjoyable and historical novel. Yes, the story of integration, college life, and competition was definitely enjoyable...but I enjoyed the love story brought out throughout the book between Willie and Sally! Not only that, but I liked all the references to the bands and music played in that era. I'd recommend this book because of the variety!
Wonderful summer reading. Great story about this Univeity and it's football team in the early 60's located in central Virginia.
The story is not just about the great team but about race relations and the school breaking the barrier and integrating
black athletes and a black coach. It very true to history of the time; quite a change from today. Any one who grew up in that time down South can relate to this narrative. An easy read and brings back memories of campus life. I recond to all looking for a entertaining novel with a review of some history of the South.
