I love Regency romance stories and I love them, even more, when a mystery is included. This book has it all; romance, mystery, suspense, some humor, and some sex. It's a great start to a new series. Can't wait to read the next book.

Book One ~ Sons of the Spy Lord
Sergeant Bink Gibson, upon settling the new Earl of Hackwell (his old commanding officer), in his reluctant role, finds himself at the point where a change is needed. Aspirations to travel to India and the potential riches it could provide him, sets his sights to leave the home he has known these last few years after returning from the battle of Waterloo. However, a summons that this time cannot be ignored has arrived and conflicted as Bink is to answer it, answer it he must as a death bed summons it was. Years ago he would have jumped at the opportunity to venture to the mansion he once visited as a young boy, now, not so much in truth he avoided it at all costs. The secret as to his true heritage, if one could call it that, was known by a scant few, but Zebediah Gibson made sure to beat it into him often, after beating it out of his mother, first. To this day, the man that stood in his memories, now as step-father left only thoughts of rage. As it happened “Edward” Bink Gibson was the illegitimate son of the Earl of Shaldon and a beautiful Irish-woman Addy. A liaison that could not result in acknowledgment of either himself or his mother, as not only was his father the illustrious Earl of Shaldon but a Spymaster of great renown.
As Bink rode his horse down the deserted road that wound to the Earls secluded estate, contemplating at last meeting his father, though under dire circumstances, a pony cart appearing disabled appeared around the bend in front of him. Distressed voices heard within the bushes along the side of the road drew his attention. What kind of soldier or man for that matter would he be if not to investigate a potential damsel in distress and provide aid? The fact that offering aid would further delay his arrival to the dreaded estate up ahead not withstanding, Bink decided to see what was about. Curious as to the cart’s travel along the same road as he, with potentially but one destination in mind, should have given him further cause to wonder, but at this point assistance was needed. Soon to discover down amongst the boxwoods, a fine figure of a woman with a rasping tongue, reluctantly admitted her need of his height and strength, never mind his manners and the impropriety of it all, to retrieve what had been lost from the cart they traveled in. Paulette Heardwyn was on a mission of her own and no one was going to stop her now that she was so close to finding answers. The need to obtain them quickly was paramount as word had it the only one who could provide them to her was on his deathbed. The sooner she could retrieve her most precious possession from this unfortunate situation the better. Also, as soon as she could find herself rid of this strapping mysterious stranger the better it would be for her as well. How soon this chance encounter would turn even more dangerous than she ever imagined. Danger, deviousness and romance all wound into one heart pounding regency read. Alina K Field masters the craft!
A good story, well written.
The book was all over the place so many characters to keep up with, had to skim thru to finish. Never get the full understanding of the story.
The first in the series, about former British soldiers, former spies with unfinished spy 'business' and a young, unprotected woman who is desperate to discover her father's legacy.
A good read for anyone one who likes Regency England.
I went into this book not really knowing what to expect. It was very exciting and I never knew what the next few pages would reveal. It is a great romance, and with all the characters you are never sure whom you should trust.This is not your usual book, but you will absolutely fall in love with this book!
Now this is what I like in a romance book! There’s mystery, anticipation, surprises, a little humor, a little sex, an evil villain, no cheating, no cliffhanger, and a happily ever after.
And since I love these featured characters so much, I’m off to get the author’s “The Marquess and the Midwife” which Bink Gibson and the Hackwells are also characters.
I look forward to reading Bakeley’s story, I hope he’s next in the Sons of the Spy Lord series. Oh, and I didn’t notice any editing errors either!
